Driver's License with EAD Renewal Pending

Hi All, I have a question on Drivers License Renewal. My EAD renewal is still in process for the last 4 months @ TX Service Center. My DL expires on 3/6. Does any one renewed their license on pending EAD( mine is 485 pending status) ? . Please move this question to appropriate forum.

I wanted to write about this anyway as I just went through a DL renewal while my EAD renewal is pending (Category: C09 - AOS). My experience is in Ann Arbor, Michigan - other states may have different procedures.

My EAD (and hence DL) was expiring on 02/27. I applied for EAD/AP renewal on 11/14 - so its been more than 3 months and no renewal as yet. I went to DMV (SoS in MI) on 02/20 for DL renewal - they asked for a copy of EAD Renewal Receipt (I-797C), copy of last I-94 from online page and copy of current EAD and DL. The process was simple - they uploaded all these documents to the USCIS SAVE system that lets them check the validity of the I-797C receipt and confirm that the EAD is indeed under renewal processing. The catch is that it take a few days for USCIS SAVE system to get back. They gave me an online tracker number that I could input on USCIS SAVE Case Check webpage to see if the request has been processed and returned to the DMV or not. Fortunately for my case it only took 3 business days. I returned to DMV, they looked up the result of their enquiry and renewed my license for 1 year.

Since I am in a college town and they see many such cases - they had the process on auto-pilot - they knew exactly what to do and assured me that it just takes a bit of time but works out fine. It also helps that Ann Arbor is super liberal and the local DMV gets a lot of international student/professional traffic - so they are used to handling cases that are complex from immigration point of view. I am told that other DMVs in Michigan that do not see similar client base have no no idea what to do and things tend to get bogged down in red tape.

Hopefully my experience will be of benefit to folks looking to renew their DLs based on pending EAD renewal application.

Thank you so much on your detailed reply. My SAVE status says Case in Continuance. I will go check with DMV on friday.
