p.s. - Those who understand marathi, watch how Madgulkar uses common marathi and not a fancy marathi and yet is able to convey the message with more power than any other poet contemporary or otherwise. There was only one GaDiMa. I don't think there will ever be another in our lifetime.

Well - when I was there TTM was going through one of the worst slowdowns. 6 months of sales as FG inventory sitting on every open piece of land in the plant. It was quite a sight. I wish I had kept the my TTM stocks available for 60 odd bucks those days IIRC.

TTM was not a particularly nice company to work for then. They hired 150+ GTEs (Graduate Trainee Engineers) in my batch and may be held on to <10 of us after 2 years. I have some stories of how things happened there that you wouldn't believe! I am told its much better now.

My first paycheck was 10K. That could afford me quite an affluent lifestyle then. Now I believe you could take 9 of your friends for a nice dinner with that money (or I may be wrong ... haven't done that in India in a while)!

"Nice" dinner for 10 people in 10K: not gonna happen anymore. Every time I visit India I am surprised by the inflation, especially food inflation. Recently with all that service tax stuff, it is even worse. Couple years back I saw ONE Appam for 800 Rs at a New Delhi hotel. A roadside, cheapest, newspaper wrapped vada-pav in Thane was 10 Rs last year. Hotel rooms rates in Ranchi (my home town) are higher than those in Milwaukee (my current home) for the same quality offering.

I will say this though: serious medical care (heart surgery, cancer treatment etc) is much, much, much cheaper in India than in US. Recently I was unfortunate enough to see both sides in action for similar surgeries in my family. A 60K billing to the insurance company in US was comparable to a Rs 2 lakh cash bill in the best hospital in Bangalore.

Same story here. Something serious medical was not being taken care well here in US. Finally it got sorted out in India. The cost differential was 1:50 (in US it would've cost 100-200K). Forget cost - the doctors in US couldn't diagnose - didn't care - or worse simply ignored.

The healthcare in US has gone to dogs.
