My intention was never to disrespect another user, rather disagree with how he used a derogatory term at a place he worked. Call me old fashioned. I believe work is worship.
We all need to cut India some slack. For such a young democratic nation that is not even 100 years old, and in spite of having such antagonistic neighbors on our doorstep and repeated incursions and terrorist attacks and other jugaads they keep doing, we are still top 5 in GDP (yeah, I know PPP, not per capita :)) and still getting millions out of poverty every year. I know we have the issues that we have there, everyone is trying their best to provide for their families and won't think too much about being altruistic when it comes to bettering their own life. Everyone understands these arbitrary quotas were set way back and anachronistic now, it is just taking a lot to change it and it's not happened so far and will be difficult to bring about that change for many different reasons.
I love this comment because of a personal anecdote that I would like to share. I work in the O&G industry and someone a couple of years back said, "hey there is this company called Reliance in India who wanted to see if our product will be a fit." Obviously the sales guy was a bit green and did not do his research but he naturally assumed I would know more. I gave him and internal teams a short overview and they were just blown away that a company in India could have a market cap of $100B with a B. When we visited India for meetings, we were basically treated like kings in their resort type environment in the west of India and the Americans were just blown away by the sheer amount of wealth and influence that everything exuded there. Their corporate offices were just amazing with all the latest features, you could eat anything you want every day in their massive cafeteria with highest quality of food and deserts, it was just mind boggling. I have never done some business with companies based in India or have major branches but this is what has been reported to be the norm per many of my contacts in India who work in places like Deloitte, Accenture, Capgemini and other major employers. All in all, it was just a good feeling that ok this type of progress is happening in my country. Yeah, there are still potholed roads, yes there are lot of slums and poverty and political turmoil, but things are continuing to get better thought progress is more incremental than we would like. We personally know some of our relatives who came from rural locations and because being able to get a decent education and got into some of these firms and were able to lift themselves and families and extended families in some cases out of maybe not complete poverty but to a decent respectable existence. Now their children will grow up with much better opportunities to be successful. It's heartening to see such outcomes.Quote:
