Ex-Employer asking exceptly high relocation amt, they spent on me.

I joined a Philly based company, who gave me rented accommodation as part of relocation package. I worked there for 5 weeks, then resigned.
This company has sent me bill of $26,000, which includes 12,000 joining bonus and air fare reimbursement. I am ready to pay 12,000. They are asking for 26,000.
My question is, if I pay only 12,000 and don't pay remaining amount which is essentially for rented accommodation, what are repercussions? Has anyone gone issues like this? Can it impact my credit score?

singax - first ask them a copy of the contract you may have signed with them that entitles them a refund of such expenses.
If no such contract exists then I think you don't owe them anything. But if you did sign a contract then you should hire a lawyer. Not all contracts are legal. e.g. One can't sign a contract to kill another person and then be held accountable for not abiding by the contract.

singax - a completely layman's opinion - if I were in your shoes, I would read the joining contract very closely - what does that mention about return of signing bonus and relocation expenses. Everything depends upon that - the exact language and the fine print.

It will affect your credit score only if it goes to a collection agency.

I signed a paper with Terms and condition, I terminate my employment, Need pay back amount directly reimbursed to me or via vendor.

I am ready to give back joining bonus and airfare reimbursed to me but employer is asking for H1B fees, he paid to attorney, hotel/ temp living they arranged to me for 4 weeks.

thanks once again. I am thinking to approach some consultant /lawer on this.

I believe the law allows them to recoup the h1b expenses and temporary accomodation should you choose to end the contract before it is void
