gcq - the fact they didn't adopt the other business model is what I am calling shameful. Even more so considering the fact that unlike microsoft and googles - Indian IT companies always get first claim on the best talent in India. In US microsoft and google are second choice of the top talent. The first choice is always wall street.

Like you I want to see India equal or excel in terms of innovation, wealth etc. However there are several factors contributing to it.
Reasons galore - some legitimate and others not so. But it indeed is shameful for a country with 1B people to have these IT companies only act as outsourcing companies. And of course shame is on all of us since we too are part of the whole right? No doubt about that.
I have a project in mind to foster innovation in India at school level. I wonder if through this forum we could do it. Instead of donating the advertising revenue from this forum to various organization - we can use it towards such a project. Just a thought ....

Myself and most of the known friends of mine are able to get education without spending a single rupee.
I remember getting a merit scholarship which actually funded my very meager college fees.
Compared to that in USA it would be next to impossible to get similar level of education without life time loans
Same goes with health and other expenses
Business wise most of Indian IT companies and other Indian companies are started by Individuals with minimum capitol and developing markets and good support from all around.
Agreed given amount of population, there are issues, but Industry growth rate is always higher than USA
About Indians giving back to India, I believe that the another reason of recent growth in India is due to NRI's giving back and the dollar revenue figures would be astonishing.
Immigration wise, the net migration to India from other countries is very much higher than net migration to USA. In fact this had been a problem in Mumbai/Chennai
Coming back to Indian IT companies, their business model is human capitol and not development like Google or Microsoft and they would never aspire to be one.
When asked long time back, Nehru once commented about rise in population, if properly used this would be asset as human capital and that is what happening.
Now some disappointing facts, these Consulting companies are inserting people considering them as human capital as such and treat them as such who have nothing but mundane jobs, but mind it well paying compared to local other job categories.
But this is the demand right now and the supply will always will have to match, unless some other motivating forces come into play.
Sorry Q I did not want to hijack this thread. My idea is to promote innovation would also require to have some reverse tie ups not just bring human capital, but ideas and products.

Anyway ... but coming back to the topic ... in what small way we could contribute to fostering innovation in India?
One of the ways to encourage innovation is to institute some form of competition where innovative ideas/original thinking are rewarded with enough money to change one's life.
It could be modeled after "Who wants to be a millionaire" with candidates being rewarded for their innovation as against answering general knowledge questions.
