Find out local SSA office from ( https://secure.ssa.gov/apps6z/FOLO/fo001.jsp ) and note down its address and time, find out parking facility etc from google map. Go 30 minutes before it opens to avoid huge lines and waiting periods, and stand near door so that you are among the first people to enter when guard opens door.

Fill out application form pdf (http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.pdf) and take its print out, so that you don't waste time in office.

Section 4 of form , date of birth, says office use only, I had still filled it out. Section 5 will be Legal Alien Allowed to Work. Section 7 I filled out Asian as that is closest. Both parents name as asked, and in ssn area of parents, I checked Unknown. Other sections are self explanatory. section 18 would be self.

Take passport, EAD card, and the filled out form, and of course your wife :D

The officer will ask few questions to your wife to be answered in yes or no under oath. he will ask things like, did you every work in USA (no), do you have any bank accounts (yes if she is joint account holder with you), and so on. At the end he will give you a letter confirming that you have applied for SSN and you will get it in n number of weeks.

An important thing to note - most SSN offices are in what are called "Federal Buildings" - and they do not allow any electronics inside - no cell phones. So make sure to not take your cell phones with you when you go there. They may have some locker facilities to store phones etc - but best avoid the hassle altogether.

I have a follow up a question. Applied for my wifes SSN and recieved it. She is moving from ITIN to SSN. During tax filing when using her SSN to efile (turbotax) asked me for last year AGI. I used the AGI from last year for both but got my filing rejected. I googled the issue and some indicate that they used $0.00 for spouse AGI and Last years AGI for self and it went through. Others indicate that they still got rejected. Does any one here attempted to e-file after switching from ITIN to SSN? How did you address this issue.
