I converted from F1-OPT to H1b, with my H1b three period valid from Oct 1st 2011 to Sep 30th 2014. I am currently employed with the same employer and with the same job designation. I would like to visit India in 2014. My question is:

1. Is it recommended to do this after I get my H1b renewed (e.g. in Oct 2014) for additional 3 years
OR
2. Can I travel in Feb 2014, with around six months left for my visa to expire. This would be my preferred date.

I would appreciate your comments.

Welcome xkcd.
If I were you I wouldn't do it because A) it costs money B) it costs time to do it C) I can always do it during the next trip to India or simply by going to mexico or canada and then do it in those consulates.

Not having valid H1B post sepetember does restrict your ability to make a quick trip to India or overseas because then you MUST obtain another visa (i.e. H1B in this case) before you can reenter.
