H1B to EAD - Is it possible?

My wife was on H1B and she have EAD as well. Now she wanted to move out of the employer and work on EAD. Do we need to change her status to H4 ? Or is it possible to start working for a different employer using I9 form.I think EAD is not a status but an authorization to work, please advise.

Your wife can start working on EAD by submitting I9 form.

With changing her status from H1 to H4, she cannot work any further. To kick start working, she has to use EAD. Whenever she starts working either on EAD/H1 for work authorisation , H4 is lost .

H1B to EAD is possible. While on EAD her status would be AOS pending.
