Experts,
My passport is expiring in Aug'12 and I think it takes about 4-6 weeks to get passport renewed. And could me more for whatever unknown caused because it is Indian Gov.
My priority date is Sept'07. There is a really really small chance of me getting current in next month or two.
I want to know: Do I need to have original passport in hand when my date becomes current? or just having photocopy is fine?
And the communication address in India has changed from what it is in my passport. Can that delay my renewal process?
Thank you for your time.

Why the urgency to renew it now if it is expiring in Aug 2012? Also you just need the photocopy when you send the docs to USCIS.
If you have a genuine emergency, then you can get your passport the same day by paying additional fees.

There is no emergency but my H1Stamp is expired. For any reason if I need to go for stamping, I will need passport validity for minimun 6 months. I don't want to wait until last moment and there is no harm in getting renewed early as I don't know if my PD will be current next month or next year.

gc0907:
Is your question with respect to filing 485 if PD becomes current soon, or going for H1 stamping?
I am in similar boat, the dates are only month plus or minus. want to follow this thread.

Yes, mainly it is for filing 485 if PD becomes current. H1B stamping point was just in case I have to go out of US.

I looked at the site for embassy at Washingon DC - you can get new passport on the same day ($150 more for this Tatkal service), you have to personally go to the embassy. Check the embassy/consulate where you are supposed to apply, and you might want to spend time/money to go and get it using Tatkal - if you want to be on the safer side.
Otherwise, you will get 4 weeks window between two visa bulletins, so there is a possibility that you will not have the new passport on your hand, to be able to give that passport's information with 485 filing.
Any idea what the process is if our passport changes while 485 processing in inflight?

visagcinfo,
I am not sure about the process but I guess the only thing that might change in new passport is the dates(issue and expiration) and possibly address in India. I think passport number should remain the same.
And I think it will be about 6 weeks time window to file the 485 from the date of visa bulletin.

Passport number changes everytime you get it extended after the 10 years expiry. You can apply for new passport within the 1 year period before the expiry date and as stated above it should be done in 4 weeks time and if Tatkal even faster.

the window starts approximately 2-3 weeks after the VB comes out (Next month's VB comes out 2nd Friday of the current month). We can apply for I-485 from the 1st of the next month. There is somewhere between 2 & 3 weeks before the next month starts and we have that whole month to apply I-485. [ Correct me if I got the timeframe to apply I-485 wrong ]
so.. there is certainly 6 weeks time to file I-485 from the day VB comes out for forth coming month.
Ofcourse, if the PD does not retrogress, we have more time to apply I-485. I am sure we don't want to take that chance.

Seriously? They change the passport number? Wondering what's the logic behind that. Unless the passport is lost or stolen I don't see why they should change the passport number. I know the Driving License number in US does not change upon renewal.

You're correct. That's exactly why I said 'about 6 weeks'.

Any idea how long a passport renewal takes with NY Indian Consulate in case submitted through mail. With the surprise actions of CO, I am not sure how dates will move next month and my daughther's passport is expiring in Mar.
Also do we need her passport for medicals in case the dates move to 2010 year end. Since she is a minor and upto date with vaccines, a report from her Pediatric would suffice for USCIS recognized doc to signed her medicals?

According to Consulate General "For reissue of old Passport issued from CGI, New York, it may take a week provided application is in order and no prior reference is required. If the old Passport was issued by a Regional Passport Office in India or by other Indian Embassy/Consulate requiring prior clearance, the processing time is six weeks."
